Auto FAQ's Auto FAQ’s

If my friend uses my vehicle, is there insurance coverage in case something happens?

The common saying "If you lend your vehicle, you lend your insurance" applies. As long as there is consent from the owner of the vehicle, the vehicle is insured, and the driver is qualified by law to drive, the same coverage is available to someone else as though it were the owner him/herself driving. It should be noted that regular drivers or licensed operators in a household are required to be disclosed to the insurance company. The above example represents an infrequent occasion where the vehicle was borrowed.

Why aren’t my sunglasses and jacket covered by my auto insurance from the B&E in my vehicle?

Your auto insurance is designed to cover theft, if selected under the comprehensive or Specified Perils section. The equipment that is permanently attached or apart of the automobile is covered. In the above example, sunglasses and a jacket do not fit this definition. They are insured under a property policy, subject to the deductible selected for that policy.

Is it important to advise my broker of my son or daughter who has just obtained their drivers license?

In Alberta, the legal age to obtain a driver’s license is 16 years. Insurance Companies request that they are notified when the individual has obtained their license. If the driver has purchased his or her own vehicle, they would set up their own auto policy. If the individual is living at home and using the vehicles already insured and owned by Mom & Dad, he or she should be added as an occasional driver. The advantage to the new driver is that insurance history is started, without owning a vehicle. The company is also satisfied that they are collecting premium to compensate for a greater exposure to the existing policy of the parents. Without notification to the company of a newly licensed driver, several consequences could occur in a claim situation. Insurance companies do not require notification for the learner’s license, eligible at the age of 14 years.

Property FAQ's Property FAQ’s

Are there any special limits for contents or personal possessions that I should be aware of within my property policy?

Your property policy does contain special limits for certain types of contents. This limit will outline the maximum amount payable for that particular item in a claim situation. Companies vary on what limits and to what extent the limits are placed on various items. Some common examples for most companies are for Jewelry, Watches, Furs and Gems. Onus is placed on the insured to be aware of approximately what amount of contents they have and in particular, what high value or high limit items exist. If a problem for a particular type of contents exists due to special limits, the insured can insure this item(s) separately on a floater.

Does my homeowners insurance policy have any stipulations about leaving the home unattended during the winter months?

Yes. Most companies have a requirement to have the home checked to ensure the home is in order as often as once a day. The onus is on the insured to make sure that they have made arrangements for trips longer than 4 consecutive days in order to ensure coverage is available at a time of loss.
